Desktop virtualisation firm NComputing has used the Raspberry Pi 3 to build its thin client computer. This remotely runs Windows, or another Linux desktop, served from a main computer.

Thin clients are lightweight computers that access a remote server, typically a cloud‑based computer or virtualisation environment. The server does all the heavy computational lifting, while the thin client provides the interface.

The RX300 supports virtual desktops from nine popular Windows operating systems, including Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016.

The NComputing website explains:

NComputing has delivered more than 3 million low-cost thin clients worldwide. Our latest, the RX300, is built for productivity using the latest Raspberry Pi 3 platform. Designed and optimized specifically for NComputing’s award-winning vSpace Pro desktop virtualization solution, the RX300 is cloud-ready and provides a rich PC-like experience. RX300 features full-screen, full-motion HD multimedia playback with vCAST direct streaming technology support, built-in transparent USB redirection achieving unparalleled peripheral support, WiFi, and optional access to Linux Raspbian OS managed by the IT admin. The RX300 provides a simple-to deploy, centrally managed, high-performance virtual desktop, perfect for use in SMB and education.

“Looking at the IT industry, Raspberry Pi has established itself as a robust and reliable device, one increasingly becoming viable within an enterprise setting,” comments Christos Golias, head of sales at Tarox AG, Germany. “The virtualisation environment provided by NComputing’s vSpace Pro 10 software coupled with the affordability of an RX300 offers an attractive IT deployment solution for businesses.”

Young Song, NComputing CEO, explains: “Our vision is to make easy-to-use, powerful, and centrally managed computing solutions even more affordable. The Raspberry Pi single-board computer is renowned for its innovation, its portable size, versatility, and economic viability, making it the perfect thin client. Matched with our vSpace Pro software, we know it will deliver what IT admins need, and what end users want.”

You can boot the RX300 into two modes: Thin Client Mode or Raspbian, enabling users to access the Linux OS.

The RX300 costs $99 excluding taxes, and includes a one-year subscription to vSpace Pro 10.
